Alexa Holland’s father was her hero—until her shocking discovery that she and her mother weren’t his only family. Ever since, Alexa has worked to turn her life in a different direction and forge her own identity outside of his terrible secrets,. But when she meets a man who’s as damaged by her father’s mistakes as she is, Alexa must help him.
Caine Carraway wants nothing to do with Alexa’s efforts at redemption, but it’s not so easy to push her away. Determined to make her hate him, he brings her to the edge of her patience and waits for her to walk away. But his actions only draw them together and, despite the odds, they begin an intense and explosive affair.
Only Caine knows he can never be the white knight that Alexa has always longed for. And when they’re on the precipice of danger, he finds he’ll do anything to protect either one of them from being hurt again…
Hero is the story of a down and out woman needing to get back on her feet. Alexa Holland has a past, a past that Caine Carraway despises that he's involved in. When circumstances present themselves and he's in the position to hire her as her PA, he does so but only for his own motives. Alexa can't turn down his offer. For one: She wants to make amends for the sins her father caused Caine's family. Two: She's drawn to him in ways she's not going to say no too. But dammit, she's going to show him she's the best PA he's ever had.
They have a very tumultuous relationship which becomes quite a sexy push and pull between the pair. He's pushing her buttons and she's testing his resolve. It translates to some very steamy scenes but also sets up for a very powerful arc in the story. Can their love overcome their past? Can Caine forgive what Alexa's family did to his own? It's all very suspenseful.
The parts of the story that I didn't really love was that I felt like I have read this storyline before. The handsome but troubled genius money man who breathes power and mystery finally finds his match in a lowly woman fallen on hard times who no one would suspect he would fall for. He's reclusive and she's all in. While this formula is a surefire one, it's also been done many times before and with such a fan I am of Young, I hoped that she would have mixed up this plot line a little more.
The book is quite long for a romance. I found that I felt my wheels spinning as I read at points. I kept thinking, let's get on to the next element. Also Young based her book in the US but many non-American terms shown through. I think this could have gone through one more turn with an American editor.
Altogether, I did enjoy this book. For being a storyline I felt I read before, I was still entertained and still am a big fan of Young's. Will I be reading more of her books? Hell yes!
