Darkness is the only thing I see. Ever since the day my life changed. The day that everything and everyone I held close to me ceased to exist. The day I lost it all and the demons of my past consumed my every waking moment.
I tried to keep others at arm’s length. Tried not to let my darkness taint them. Ruin them. Harm them. And whether I want to admit it or not, as much as I wish I could keep them locked out, they refuse to leave. Refuse to let me suffer alone.
If I hadn’t been so focused on keeping those demons from flying free, I wouldn’t have missed how one perfect angel was able to sneak her way under my skin—refusing to let go. Making me want things I don’t deserve.
She consumes me. Her beauty knows no end. The love she promises tempts me every time she’s near. But that pure heart that makes her MY Emmy is the one thing I’m convinced I’ll destroy if I ever let her close.
I’m a broken man. A broken man with too much darkness in his soul to ever let her light shine upon me. But even that doesn’t stop me from craving her with every single breath in my body.
Flirty Review: Three Lips Bites
Okay, I may be the only person in the world who hasn't read Harper Sloan. My bad, I know. I was excited when this review opportunity came across my desk even if it was part of a series. So anyhoo...the tour company stated in the info matter that the book was a standalone which is great! WIN! So I was super excited to get started. I mean, hello, military hot dude with problems only women can help fix. Recipe for awesome, sexy times!! I'm totally in!
So Maddox Locke is a paradox. Hey, that rhymed. In Locke, we are told in a series of flashbacks some of the backstory of his character as well as Emersyn Keeze. This I felt was done very well. I didn't feel like I had to go back in the other books in the series to get the whole picture of who these characters were. Other things, though, I felt I needed the other books. But their development was very well-written and well-rounded. Locke's life hadn't been a good one. He's a heir to some rich family money, a family that doesn't accept him, and it's for nothing he had ever done but be born. Let me tell you, his family are real peaches. What they do to him is very unspeakable. The last straw for Locke was when they conned him out his inheritance. There was nothing left for Locke to do but to move on and get back to his life in the military. Unfortunately, he was badly injured and lost his leg. These events: his family's betrayal, his fiance's betrayal, and the overwhelming guilt and grief dealt to him when he couldn't save some of his fellow servicemen in his accident really helped shape a complex and difficult character in Maddox Locke. Not to forget, he lost a dern leg!
Emmy Keeze has led a horrible life as well. Even if she's very easygoing about, it is still terrifying to read how she grew up. Her parents are owners of a strip club and groomed her to be their star attraction when the time came. Can you even imagine? Throw in a molesting club manager that Emmy can't seem to get away from and her life is hell on Earth. That is until she's saved by Cooper. Coop is a member of an elite security team of some sort. (The Corps Security didn't really get explained too much in this book.) Coop took Emmy back home and to work for Corps. There, Locke and Emmy meet and, BOOM, fireworks. But we really didn't see that part. It was told to us that it happened in a past book and a couple of flashbacks.
So now, we are going back to present. Is your head spinning yet? Mine was a little but I kept up. I just kept thinking: I wished I read all the other books before this. I would appreciate this so much more.
Anyway, after Emmy had been gone from her family and the strip club for a while. she ends back there after some events happened with Coop. She's running and Locke is coming after her. They had formed a bond that neither of them really could explain, but it's what drives Locke to find her and take her home. He needs her and she needs him. If they both don't know it, they soon find out that neither can breathe without the other. That's what happens when soulmates find each other.
I'm not going to go into the rest, you'll have to read. I do now want to go back and read the first four books. They sound great, but reading this book shouldn't be labeled as it could be read standalone when it would make more sense to get to know the cast in the past books first. I felt like the kid who wanted to hang with the cool crowd and I couldn't.
About the Author
Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn't take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.
